The Role of the Saudi Electricity Regulatory Authority in Promoting Sustainable Development

In line with the Kingdom’s pioneering role in advancing sustainable development, the Authority has committed, within its strategic framework, to actively contribute to this goal by adopting clear implementation frameworks for its strategic plans and initiatives. Among the most prominent of these efforts are the following:

• Developing regulatory frameworks and policies that maximize the efficient use of energy resources and electrical infrastructure, while ensuring optimal regulatory expenditure at both the Authority and sector levels.
• Leveraging modern technologies and artificial intelligence to address regulatory challenges and compliance issues without compromising environmental sustainability, reliability, or security standards.
• Enhancing integration and coordination with relevant entities، including governmental bodies, licensed companies, and service providers — to ensure sound and safe planning for resource investment and grid interconnection expansion.
• Promoting innovation, digital transformation, and automation of regulatory and supervisory services to reduce paper-based processes and enhance user experience for consumers and establishments.
• Establishing effective mechanisms that ensure fair participation among licensees, promote competition, and prevent double taxation and commercial concealment, in coordination with the relevant authorities — thereby safeguarding consumer rights and market fairness.
• Developing human capital by building regulatory technology capabilities and empowering qualified talents within the Authority and across the electricity sector.

As a result, these efforts have led to the launch of regulatory and digital initiatives that have contributed  and continue to contribute to embedding the principles of sustainable development within the Kingdom’s electricity sector.
